Two cars hit officer, but injury is minor

CAMP WASHINGTON - A Cincinnati police officer suffered a minor leg injury Thursday after he was hit by a car while investigating a traffic crash on westbound Interstate 74 off northbound Interstate 75.

Officer Jerry Enneking of the Cincinnati Police Traffic Unit was dispatched at 12:28 p.m. to investigate a traffic crash on the ramp. Before he got out of his police car, it was hit from behind by a westbound vehicle, said Sgt. Bill Coombs.

Enneking's emergency lights were activated and he was parked on the right berm.

He called for a police supervisor and additional officers to come the scene. Then, when he got out of his car to check the others for injuries, he was struck again, by a second, westbound car.

Videotape from the cruiser shows the officer was thrown over the hood of his car and, after landing on the pavement, slid under another car, Sgt. Coombs said.

"It's like wow," Enneking said from his home Thursday night after watching the video. "It's a good thing I moved when I did. If I had waited a little longer it would have been worse."

Enneking, 38, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was treated and released for a right ankle and right knee injury. He has been a Cincinnati police officer for 15 years. An investigation continues.
