Best bets: What's on TV tonight

Gannett News Service

Must-see

The West Wing, 9 p.m., Channels 5, 22.

All three of President Bartlet's daughters are in the White House for Christmas. That's a rare occasion - and one clouded by distractions.

Christian relief workers have been arrested in Sudan and assisted-suicide doctors have been arrested in Oregon. Then there is the president's son-in-law who wants to run for Congress.

Horatio Hornblower: Duty,

8 p.m., A&E. It reruns at 10 p.m., midnight and 2 a.m. Tuesday's Hornblower film ended with a surprise. Acting more from sympathy than passion, the young Naval commander proposed to Maria, the sweet daughter of his penniless landlady.

Tonight's film starts with the wedding, then goes on to an adventure against Napoleon's French forces. Hornblower rescues a mysterious, French-speaking man. He also confronts Wolfe, the traitor. This is an epic story, tautly written and beautifully filmed.

Other shows worth watching

Christmas in Rockefeller Center, 8 p.m., Channels 5, 22. The Christmas tree ceremony is filled with lots of up-tempo music. That includes both American Idol winners (Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard), plus Ashanti,

Enrique Iglesias, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Harry Connick Jr.

That '70s Show, 8 p.m., Channels 19, 45. Now that he's not going away to college so he can help support his family, Eric must compete with Kelso for a waiter's job.

The Simple Life, 8:30 p.m., Channels 19, 45. Rich kids Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are required to make their own money so they try working as milk maids at a dairy.

The O.C., 9 p.m., Channels 19, 45. Here's the down side of the holidays. Family woes drive Marissa to drink and that makes Ryan recall some of the awful Christmases he's seen.

King of Queens, 9 p.m., Channels 12, 7. After losing her job, Carrie spends a lot of time slouching around.

Trista and Ryan's Wedding, 9 p.m., Channels 9, 2. This week, we see the bachelor and bachelorette parties. That sets up next week when the wedding of Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter will be a two-hour special.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, 10 p.m., Channels 9, 2. In this special, which could turn into a series, the Extreme Makeover people try to copy the Trading Spaces formula - even hiring that show's carpenter, Ty Pennington, to refurbish a home. The difference is that this project has a huge budget and many designers with no one in charge. The result is loud and chaotic but the eventual makeover is impressive.
