Unknowns can shine as playoff time nears

Fantasy football

By John Nemo
Enquirer contributor

Playoffs? Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs!

With that Jim Mora rant aside, it's time to get serious. Week 14 of the NFL season means one thing - your fantasy league is either starting or already in the midst of its playoffs.

Every year, some lesser-known player comes streaking out of nowhere, racking up these amazing games when your squad needs them most. Last year it was Amani Toomer, who put up 363 yards and three scores during Weeks 14-16, including a monster 204-yard, two-touchdown effort in Week 16 that won the Super Bowl for more than a few squads.

This year another non-superstar is going to catch fire and help carry a squad to fantasy bliss, but who will it be? Here's a few potential candidates:

Seattle Slew

If you are one of those fantasy geeks who goes over every team's schedule in July, you knew Matt Hasselbeck and company were due to catch fire at just the right time. After shredding Baltimore and Cleveland, the Seahawks now get Minnesota, St. Louis and Arizona as the fantasy cakewalk truly begins. Hasselbeck has eight touchdowns and about 650 yards passing over the past two weeks, enabling Darrell Jackson and Koren Robinson to light up secondaries. Even Shaun Alexander is getting into the act again, going for 127 yards and a score last week in spite of Hasselbeck's aerial circus. Start 'em if you got 'em.

Flutie to Boston - More Than a Feeling

ESPN's Chris Berman keeps calling out that catchphrase on "NFL Primetime" because Doug Flutie and David Boston keep hooking up. Since Flutie took over for Drew Brees, Boston has gone over 80 yards with at least one touchdown in three of the past four games. With Detroit, Green Bay and Pittsburgh on the schedule, the secondaries are soft, setting Boston up for another one of his patented closing runs.

Marcus Mania

Count me among the believers that Marcus Robinson would never be heard from again after his "What the heck was that?" game against Seattle. But last week he turned two catches into 78 yards and a touchdown, and Anthony Wright is looking his way more and more. If you're desperate at wide receiver, Robinson's hot streak could continue thanks to the likes of Cincinnati, Oakland and Cleveland on the docket.

Fragile No More

Fred Taylor has done the impossible - stayed healthy for two consecutive seasons. The result is another 1,000-yard rushing season and the envy of everyone who taunted Taylor owners on draft night. With the Jaguars' defense giving people fits and the team still playing hard for Jack Del Rio, Taylor will continue to get oodles of carries and receptions. He has great matchups this week (against Houston) and in Week 16 (New Orleans). Next week's game against New England is lousy, but two out of three isn't bad.

Speaking of fragile, Jerome Bettis is very banged up, but it's hard to bench The Bus when you see Oakland, the New York Jets and San Diego on the horizon. Bettis should be able to approach 100 yards and a touchdown or two in every single one of those games.
