Warm up with Redsfest
It feels like winter outside, but it will seem like baseball season at the Albert B. Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center when the eighth annual Redsfest begins today.
The event, an autograph, memorabilia, meet-and-greet extravaganza, will feature Barry Larkin, Sean Casey, Austin Kearns and Adam Dunn. It runs from 4 to 10 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Because he will be attending the funeral of an aunt, Casey will not arrive at Redsfest until approximately 5:30 p.m. today. He will miss his 4:30 autograph session for children.
Reds radio broadcasters Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall will be in attendance, as will new general manager Dan O'Brien.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12. They are available at the Dugout Shop in the Westin Hotel downtown, tickets.com outlets and by phone at 877-639-REDS.
Miami assistant up for honor
Miami University offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery was tabbed one of five finalists for the Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant coach. The winner will be announced the first week of January.
Met champ faces world's top duo
Former Kentucky All-American Cedric Kauffmann, the 2003 Cincinnati Met champion, gets his chance to face the big boys Sunday. Kauffmann will pair with former UK standout Greg Van Enburg and face the world's No. 1 doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan, in an exhibition at Rupp Arena (5:30 p.m.). Proceeds from the Lexus Tennis Classic will benefit the University of Kentucky Tennis Foundation. Also on the agenda: top-ranked Andy Roddick and James Blake in an exhibition singles match. For tickets, call (859) 233-3535.
CORRECTION
Megan Shiverdecker, a sophomore at St. Ursula, should have been named to the first team of the Enquirer girls golf stars last month. Shiverdecker had a 41.46 season average.
