Jackets demote Knutsen to minors

The Enquirer and wire reports

Forward Espen Knutsen, a former NHL All-Star whose deflected slap shot led to the death of a 13-year-old Columbus girl last year, was demoted to the Blue Jackets' AHL affiliate in Syracuse. Knutsen, a one-time Cincinnati Mighty Duck, could be either traded or return to play in Europe, assistant general manager Jim Clark said.

FRIDAY IN THE NHL: Jim Vandermeer, Tony Amonte and John LeClair scored, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to their 11th straight victory at home, 3-2 over the Phoenix Coyotes.

• Thrashers 6, Ducks 2: Marc Savard scored two goals, and Byron Dafoe won for the first time in 10 months. Slava Kozlov scored a goal and assisted on three others for Atlanta.

• Hurricanes 1, Habs 1: Mike Ribeiro scored a power-play goal with 5:49 left in regulation as Montreal extended its unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2). Miami University grad Kevyn Adams scored his first career short-handed goal for Carolina.

• Flames 2, Wild 1: Jarome Iginla scored with 22.8 seconds remaining.

ECHL CLONES LOSE: The Wheeling Nailers defeated Cincinnati 5-4 at U.S. Bank Arena despite two goals and two assists by Cyclones forward Garrett Prosofsky.

AHL DUCKS LOSE: Chris Bala and Matt Foy scored third-period goals to lift the Houston Aeros to a 3-1 victory over Cincinnati at Houston's Toyota Center. Casey Hankinson scored and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 34 shots for Cincinnati, which has lost three straight and is 1-6-0-0 in its last seven games.

MIAMI EDGES OSU: Senior center Derek Edwardson scored with 1:29 left to lift the RedHawks (9-6-2, 7-3-1 CCHA) to a 2-1 victory over No. 6-ranked and first-place Ohio State (11-6-0, 8-4-0 CCHA) at Value City Arena.

Brandon Crawford-West (7-1-1) stopped 32 shots for Miami. OSU's Mike Betz (9-3-3) made 31 saves. The teams play at 7:35 p.m. today at Goggin Arena in Oxford.

Golf

PGA TOUR Q SCHOOL: Swedes Daniel Chopra and Mathias Gronberg shared the lead at 13-under 203 through three rounds of the qualifying tournament finals. Oak Hills High graduate Brett Wetterich was tied for 53rd at 213. Miami University grad Brad Adamonis was tied for 144th at 222. The top 30 players after the sixth round Monday will receive 2004 PGA Tour cards. The remaining players will get exempt or conditional status on the Nationwide Tour.

GRAND SLAM OF GOLF: U.S. Open winner Jim Furyk opened with a 5-under-par 67 to take a five-stroke lead over Masters champion Mike Weir at Poipu Beach, Hawaii.

British Open champion Ben Curtis shot a 73 and PGA champion Shaun Micheel had a 75 in the 36-hole exhibition for the winners of this year's four majors.

Horse racing

TURFWAY PARK: For the second consecutive rainy night, Rafael Bejarano rode winners from nine mounts.

• My Trusty Cat, 3, who has been been running in graded stakes company behind Yell, Awesome Humor and Golden Marlin, heads today's $50,000 My Charmer Stakes for fillies and mares.

INTENDED RETIREMENT: Pacing Triple Crown winner No Pan Intended was retired with 17 wins in 21 races.

Elsewhere

BOXING: Former IBF featherweight champion Jorge Paez, perhaps in his last fight, won a split decision over Scott McCracken.

SOCCER: North Carolina and Connecticut will meet in the NCAA women's championship game for the fourth time after shutout semifinal wins. UNC, seeking its 17th title, beat fourth-seeded UCLA 3-0; unseeded UConn topped Florida State 2-0.
