Last chance: Patricia Weiner Gallery is featuring "Playing with Baby" (1889), an outstanding example of the genre scenes of peasant life painted by Henry Mosler. The painting was recently discovered in a Connecticut home where it hung for 40 years. The gallery has sold the painting to a local collector, so this is the last chance to see this masterwork. In the painting a family gathers around an infant's cradle, obviously delighted by the new addition. Mosler, the son of Jewish immigrants, moved to Cincinnati in 1851, where he studied with James H. Beard. Through Dec. 19. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 9393 Montgomery Road, Montgomery. 791-7717.
Popular show: Cincinnati Art Galleries is featuring Panorama XVIII: Cincinnati Painters from 1850 to the Present through Jan. 31. One of the most popular shows of the season, you'll have to get there early if you want to buy. More than 70 paintings by artists such as Frank Duveneck, Henry Farny, Louis Henry Meakin, Edward Potthast Julie Morrow Deforest (pictured) and John Twachtman are on view. 225 E. Sixth St., downtown. 381-2128.

FYI
Opera substitution: Cincinnati Opera announced this week that The Emperor of Atlantis by Viktor Ullmann will replace Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher for the Summer Festival. Usher has been postponed because of a schedule conflict. The Emperor will join the one-act opera The Maids by Peter Bengtson in its U.S. premiere. Artistic director Nicholas Muni will direct both.
(Look for more information about the opera season Sunday in Tempo.)
Second maestro: The Hamilton Fairfield Symphony Orchestra season has grown so much, it has appointed a second maestro. David Burchfield, trumpeter and former director of bands for Fairfield City Schools, has been named associate conductor of the orchestra. Burchfield will take the podium when music director Paul Stanbery is unavailable.
The orchestra presents "The Majesty of Christmas," 4 and
7 p.m. Sunday, the Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, to benefit the Emergency Money Fund. Tickets: $10; (513) 895-5151; www.hfso.org.
