Chippewas earn upset
Unlike Ball State's season-opening wins over Kansas and UCLA two years ago or the attention-getting wins posted by MAC football teams this season, eye-catching upsets have been scarce for the basketball teams.
But Central Michigan defeated No. 23 Notre Dame 69-68 last Saturday. The Chippewas' upset of the Fighting Irish was unlikely. Despite playing their sixth game in 13 days, they led for most of the game before facing a five-point deficit with 29 seconds left. But 5-foot-6 Joe Carr hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the win.
Kent State and Toledo both opened the season with four consecutive wins but against mostly unimpressive teams.
Marshall's Ronny Dawn, the former Newport Catholic sharpshooter, led the MAC with an average of 3.4 3-pointers a game.
