Eight nurses who were among those fired by Christ Hospital after a "sick-out" last month have filed charges against the hospital with the National Labor Relations Board.
The nurses argue that the hospital violated federal law when it fired them because their actions were a form of "protected concerted activity." In essence, they claim they had the right to make a job protest even though they weren't part of a union.
"We really wanted to make a statement to management that they can't treat nurses like this," said Lois Bailey.
A Nov. 6 "sick-out" ultimately involved 12 nurses in the hospital's recovery area. They were not offered a three-year, $30,000 bonus the hospital was offering to nurses in several other job categories.
All the nurses who were fired were able to land jobs at hospitals that were not part of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, which includes Christ.
Gail Myers, spokeswoman for the Health Alliance said she had no comment about the filing.
