Reds pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in Sarasota on Feb. 17. Physical exams will take place the next day, and the first workout is scheduled for Feb. 19. Position players will report Feb. 23. The first full-squad workout under manager Dave Miley will be Feb. 24 or 25. The Reds' spring training opener is March 4 vs. the Pirates in Bradenton, Fla. Opening Day is Monday, April 5, vs. the Cubs at Great American Ball Park.

Writers honor Kitna, Bennett

The Cincinnati Chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America on Wednesday named quarterback Jon Kitna as its Bengals MVP and running back Brandon Bennett as the "Good Guy" award recipient. Voting members are Bengals beat reporters from the Enquirer, Post, Dayton Daily News, Columbus Dispatch and Associated Press. Kitna has thrown a career-high 25 touchdown passes in leading the Bengals to their best 14-game record (8-6) since 1988. Bennett, a special-teams player and backup running back, was recognized for consistent and outstanding cooperation with media.

XU tickets on sale

Three hundred unclaimed student seats are available for Xavier's 2 p.m. game against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at Cintas Center. Tickets are $19 each and can be purchased through TicketMaster or the Xavier ticket office. For more information, call 745-3411.

Cornhole tournament

The inaugural Cincinnati Cornhole Classic will take place at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at U.S. Bank Arena. A total of $5,000 will be given away in prize money, in addition to cornhole sets and other prizes. The first-place team will win $2,000, a personalized cornhole set, four tickets to the Feb. 21 Cincinnati Cyclones game and a suite for 12 people to see Shania Twain at U.S. Bank Arena on May 22. Teams registering before Jan. 9 will pay a $65 fee, which includes T-shirts for both team members. After Jan. 9, the cost will be $75.
