The Early Word

Jump on your weekend

At the clubs: Da Vinci's Notebook plays the 20th Century at 8 p.m. today. No instruments. Soaring vocals. This Arlington, Va.,-based band, with its Simpsons-line sense of humor, promises songs that skewer everything. $15 at the door. 3021 Madison Road, Oakley. 731-8000.

• At the Southgate House: Cigar Store Indians. Will these rockabilly-inspired four friends from Georgia sing "Dirty Belly Button"? The show (18 and older) starts at 9 p.m. today. Doors open at 8 p.m. $10. 24 E. Third St., Newport. (859) 431-2201.

• At the BarrelHouse: The Bendables, a jam band from Athens, Ohio. 9 p.m. today. $4. 421-2337.

Countdown

On radio: The public radio show From the Top, a weekly radio series that showcases talented kids, flew Catherine Turner, 17, a French hornist from West Chester Township, to Troy, N.Y., last month to tape a show. The Lakota West High School senior, who performed the Strauss Horn Concerto and a new piece by Peter Schickele, can be heard locally at 9 a.m. Jan. 24 on WGUC-FM (90.9). Another show, taped in Music Hall in November with other local talent, will air Jan. 3.

FYI

Janelle Gelfand

Celebrity stars: Covedale Center for the Performing Arts has been lining up celebs to take the starring roles in Love Letters, playing Jan. 15 to Feb. 1 at its Glenway Avenue home.

The show's conceit is to have a different pairing on stage at every performance. The lineup includes radio fave Jim Scott with news anchor Dayna Eubanks on Jan. 29; Eubanks returns on Jan. 30 with Bob Brunner; WB64 Movie Madness co-hosts Bob Herzog and Jennifer Dalton, Jan. 17-18.
