SARASOTA, Fla. - New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fainted Saturday at a memorial service for football great Otto Graham and was hospitalized in stable condition, an emergency official said.
"Right now, he's fine," Paul Dezzi of the Sarasota County Fire Department told the Associated Press.
"He fainted. When we arrived, he was alert and oriented. He was very talkative in the ambulance," he said. "He was stable."
The 73-year-old Steinbrenner was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He was given oxygen, an electrocardiogram and intravenous fluids in the ambulance, Dezzi said.
Based on the preliminary tests, "Everything showed up fine," Dezzi said.
CALDERON KILLED: Former major-league baseball player Ivan Calderon was shot to death Saturday in Loiza, Puerto Rico. He was 41.
Witnesses said Calderon was in a store when two people entered and, without a word, shot the former outfielder multiple times in the back, said police Sgt. Maribel Arzuaga.
Calderon played 10 seasons in the major leagues with Seattle, the Chicago White Sox, Boston and Montreal. He finished his big-league career in 1993 with a .272 batting average, 104 homer and 444 RBI.
RANGERS: Outfielder Brian Jordan agreed Saturday to a one-year contract that guarantees him $1,375,000. He is expected to play right field.
The former All-Star hit .299 with six homers and 28 RBI in 66 games last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before surgery July 11 for tendinitis in his left knee. He is expected to be at full strength by spring training.
BLUE JAYS: Left-hander Valerio De Los Santos agreed to an $850,000, one-year contract with Toronto, which also agreed to minor-league deals with right-hander Jayson Durocher and outfielder Chad Hermanson.
