Siler Jr. wins in third round
Top-ranked 112-pounder Ron Siler Jr. of Covington's Shamrock Gym outclassed Lexington's Salvador Perez in an amateur bout Saturday at Thomas More College. The fight was stopped midway through the third round when a ripping, left-handed body shot by Siler to Perez's midsection sent Perez to one knee, and a flurry of body shots and a straight right to the head caused the referee to step in. "My dad (trainer Ron Siler Sr.) has always emphasized the body shots and told me to begin going to the body hard in the second round," said Siler Jr., the favorite at 112 pounds to make the 2004 U.S. Olympic boxing team. "I respect Perez for coming up here. He knew who he was boxing. Maybe he respected me too much. He has potential if he'd be more aggressive." Aaron Pryor Jr., son of the former junior welterweight world champion from Cincinnati, earned a 3-2 decision over Julius Jackson in the 178-pound weight class. Pryor Jr., 25, also of Shamrock Gym, landed four straight right hands that snapped back Jackson's head. Jackson, a 19-year-old southpaw out of the Cincinnati Police Athletic League Gym in Mount Auburn, gave Pryor all he could handle. Aaron Pryor Sr. was in attendance. "Dad brings out the best in me," said Aaron Jr. "He was more of a brawler than I am - I'm more of a boxer - but I like to show him I can get in there and mix it up."
Other decisions: Anthony Walker of Cincinnati PAL Mount Auburn won 4-1 over Nelson Ramine Jr. of Columbus at 132 pounds; Chanele Buckhanon of Dayton won 3-2 over Chad Martin of Dayton at 147 pounds; Muhammad Adams of Shamrock Gym won 5-0 over Samir Mohammed of Lexington at 178 pounds; and William Miliner of Dayton won 3-2 over Marvin Morefield of Columbus at 201 pounds.
