Francis ties for 4th in career NHL points

Enquirer news services

RALEIGH, N.C. - Carolina captain Ron Francis tied Marcel Dionne for fourth place on the NHL career points list with a goal in the second period as the Hurricanes beat Buffalo 2-1 on Monday night.

Francis' sixth goal of the season gave him 1,771 points in his 23rd season. Francis' 1,229 assists are second only to Wayne Gretzky's 1,963, and his 542nd career goal passed Stan Mikita for 21st place on the NHL list.

Francis, 40, has played 16 seasons.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, PANTHERS 4: Owen Nolan scored two third-period goals to help Toronto rally for a tie.

PENGUINS 1, BLACKHAWKS 0: Sebastien Caron stopped 30 shots in his first shutout in nearly a year, and Tomas Surovy scored the only goal in Pittsburgh's win.

BRUINS 3, CAPITALS 1: Hal Gill scored his first goal in nearly 11 months, and Felix Potvin made 28 saves for his first win in seven weeks to lead Boston.

CANADIENS 2, THRASHERS 1: Jose Theodore made 28 saves to lift Montreal past high-scoring Atlanta.

ISLANDERS 3, DEVILS 1: Mark Parrish scored two goals as the Islanders won their fifth straight overall, their seventh consecutive at home and their third in a row over the Stanley Cup champion Devils.

MIGHTY DUCKS 2, LIGHTNING 0: Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 31 saves, and Anaheim snapped a 13-game road winless streak by beating Tampa Bay.

• STARS 2, FLYERS 2: Pierre Turgeon scored a power-play goal with 16:42 left in regulation and Dallas rallied from a two-goal deficit.

BLUES 3, BLUE JACKETS 2: Ryan Johnson scored the game-winner with 3:44 left, and Doug Weight added a goal and an assist to lead St. Louis.

• Columbus recalled goaltender Pascal Leclaire on Monday from its AHL affiliate in Syracuse.

Leclaire, 20, was Columbus' first pick and the eighth overall in the 2001 draft. He was 7-7-1 with a 2.70 goals-against average, 92.4 save percentage and one shutout in 18 games with Syracuse.

High Schools

MOELLER VS. OAK HILL: Andrew Brackman scored a game-high 33 points and Bubba Walther added 16 to lead top-ranked Moeller to a 76-60 win over Sheldon, California in the Raleigh Holiday Tournament at North Carolina State Monday.

The Crusaders, 8-0, play Oak Hill Academy, the top ranked team in USA Today's rankings, today at 9 p.m.

Horse racing

JOCKEY WALKOUT: Jockeys refused to ride Monday at Philadelphia Park in a dispute over payment delays the track blamed on the state's stricter rules for drug testing of horses.

The test results used to take no more than three days but now take up to eight, holding up payouts that range from $40 for a losing mount to $40,000 to the winner of the annual Pennsylvania Derby, a track official said.

"The riders think they should be getting paid before the results are back," said Hal Handle, chief executive officer of Philadelphia Park.

According to Handle, the cancellation of Monday's 10-race card cost the park its approximately $70,000 take on $350,000 in expected bets and an estimated $50,000 in loss simulcast payments.

Soccer

ARSENAL GAINS: Arsenal moved within a point of first place in the Premier League by beating Southampton 1-0 Monday on Robert Pires' goal in the 35th minute.

Arsenal (13-0-6, 45 points) is the only unbeaten team. League leader Manchester United, which beat Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunday, is 15-3-1 for 46 points.
