Find, maintain focus to achieve end result

Q: I have made so many New Year's resolutions and never stuck with any of them. I really want to get in better shape this year. How can I finally turn the corner?

A: The most popular New Year's resolution is always to get in better shape or lose weight. The problem is that people make resolutions without a clear focus. Simply stating what one wants to accomplish is where most people start and stop with regard to their overall fitness.

No focus leads to no results. Getting focus means to understand exactly what it takes to accomplish goals so that you know what to expect as you strive toward them.

If your goal is to be more active and lose weight, it is important to remember that learning the nuts and bolts about how to do it properly, although important, is useless without the courage, mettle, spirit and tenacity needed to stay consistent and focused on your goals.

On days when you really don't want to exercise, feel like eating a cheeseburger rather than steamed veggies or sleeping when friends ask you to join them for a sport or activity, your spirit and tenacity will require you to actually follow directions given to you by a fitness professional, doctor or nutritionist.

You are in control of your body. Don't shy away from hard work and tough times because they are constant in every other aspect of life, so get used to it and step up to the challenge. Consult a fitness pro for a program tailored to your needs, follow directions and stay consistent.
