Carolina's Weekes shuts out Blues 2-0

Kevin Weekes made 19 saves, and Danny Markov and Miami University graduate Kevyn Adams provided the offense in the Carolina Hurricanes' 2-0 victory Tuesday over the St. Louis Blues in Raleigh, N.C. Weekes' fifth shutout of the season helped the Hurricanes snap a three-game losing streak.
Markov gave the Hurricanes the lead 5:07 in with an assist from Adams, who stretched the advantage to 2-0 at 7:03 of the first by scoring a short-handed goal.
Flames 3, Isles 2: Jarome Iginla had two goals and an assist, and Calgary stretched its road winning streak to six.
Senators 5, Lightning 2: Marian Hossa scored twice and added an assist, and Ottawa extended its unbeaten streak to 10.
Canadiens 3, Sabres 1: Jose Theodore made 34 saves and Pierre Dagenais, Saku Koivu and Mike Ribeiro scored for Montreal.
Leafs 2, Predators 1: Toronto's Bryan McCabe scored twice in the third period for Toronto.

HOPMAN CUP: Lindsay Davenport began her comeback from foot surgery with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Barbora Strycova, leading the defending champion United States to a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic in Perth, Australia. James Blake, who won the Hopman Cup with Serena Williams last year, beat Jiri Novak 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to clinch the match before Davenport and Blake beat Strycova and Novak in mixed doubles 6-3, 6-2.
QATAR OPEN: Top-ranked Andy Roddick opened 2004 by beating Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
Golf
PGA TOUR: Steve Flesch of Union, Ky., is among six first-timers in the winners-only field for the Mercedes Championships, starting Thursday in Maui. Flesch won the 2003 HP Classic of New Orleans for his first win.
Flesch was looking at the pairings for the first round and rolled his eyes when he saw his name with Kenny Perry. "Awwww, I don't want to play with Kenny," Flesch moaned. "I played with him last week, and he was hitting it 50 yards by me."
Flesch and Perry are the only two players at Kapalua from Kentucky.

OHIO: River Downs was awarded 121 thoroughbred racing dates (April 9-Sept. 6) and one quarter horse racing date (Sept. 7) for 2004 by the Ohio Racing Commission. Lebanon Harness was granted 95 dates (Jan. 3-May 1 and Oct. 2-Dec. 30).
KENTUCKY: Gov. Ernie Fletcher, who wanted members of the Kentucky Racing Commission to resign, abolished the commission and appointed a new one with a different name - the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority. Among the new members is Donna Smith, wife of University of Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith.
Figure skating
NATIONALS: Michelle Kwan has won a record-tying six straight U.S. titles, and she goes for her eighth overall beginning Thursday with the short program in Atlanta.
Soccer
U.S. WOMEN: The national team, including stars Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Abby Wambach, will begin preparation for the Olympic year at the U.S. training center in Carson, Calif.
Auto racing
IRL: Eddie Cheever, the 1998 Indianapolis 500 winner, is expanding his race team to two drivers, Alex Barron and Ed Carpenter.
