Agent says Green close to deal with Cardinals
The Associated Press
Dennis Green, one of the winningest NFL coaches in the 1990s, is on the verge of signing a deal to become head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
"It's progressing," Green's agent, Gary O'Hagan, said late Wednesday. "I'm looking at the contract right now."
Green posted a 101-70 record with the Minnesota Vikings from 1992-2001, including eight trips to the playoffs. The Vikings went 15-1 in 1998 and wound up losing in the NFC title game. They also lost in the 2000 NFC title game.
Calls to Arizona vice president Michael Bidwill and football operations vice president Rod Graves weren't immediately returned.
"The attraction of Arizona for Denny is that the Cardinals' organization has had trouble winning, and now a lot of people don't expect them to start winning," O'Hagan said. "That creates a lot of upside, an opportunity for success."
The Cardinals are attracted to Green, O'Hagan said, because of his proven record as a winner.
GIANTS: Even after a year away from football, Tom Coughlin remains a no-nonsense taskmaster.
"What we must be all about now is the restoration of pride, of self pride, of team pride, the restoration of our professionalism and the dignity with which we conduct our business," Coughlin said after being introduced as the new coach of the New York Giants.
"We must restore our belief in the process by which we will win, and we must replace despair with hope and return the energy and passion to New York Giants football."
Coughlin raised eyebrows referring to last year's rash of injuries as "a cancer." New York had 12 players put on season-ending injured reserve.
"It is something that has to be corrected," he said. "It is a mental thing, I believe, as much as anything else."
TITANS: Quarterback Steve McNair went through a full practice Wednesday, which amounted to about 60 percent of the snaps with the first-team offense. Running back Eddie George ran on the side but did not practice.
EAGLES: Five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Troy Vincent remains optimistic he will play in Philadelphia's playoff game against Green Bay on Sunday, but it's not a sure thing.
"I'm going to let my body determine whether I should be able to play," Vincent said Wednesday.
BILLS: Buffalo completed the interview portion of its coaching search Wednesday by meeting with Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.
Team president Tom Donahoe said a decision is not imminent.
COLTS: Strong safety Mike Doss could return to Indianapolis' starting lineup this week after missing two games with a sprained ankle.
