Arizona coasts to win over California
The Associated Press
TUCSON, Ariz. - Hassan Adams had 19 points and nine rebounds, and No. 3 Arizona broke away early and coasted to a 95-75 win over California on Thursday night.
The victory, the Wildcats' 13th in the last 14 games against the Golden Bears, tied Lute Olson with Fred Enke for the most career wins by an Arizona coach.
Olson's 21-year record is 509-148, compared with Enke's 509-324 in 36 years.
Olson earned his 700th win overall on Saturday in a 93-74 rout of Arizona State.
Salim Stoudamire scored all 18 of his points in the first half, Ivan Radenovic had 17 points and Channing Frye 16 and four blocks in the ninth straight win for the Wildcats (10-1, 1-0 Pac-10).
Stoudamire shot 6-for-8, including four of five 3-pointers, in 26 minutes.
No. 16 Gonzaga 87, Pepperdine 70
MALIBU, Calif. - Corey Violette had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Blake Stepp scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half to help No. 16 Gonzaga beat Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference opener.
The win was the fourth straight for the Bulldogs (11-2) while the Waves (5-11) lost their fifth in a row - their longest losing streak since the 1996-97 season.
AUBURN: The NCAA claims Auburn University representatives provided a car for the mother of a high school basketball player and arranged wire payments to another prospect in hopes of signing them.
The NCAA's Notice of Allegations, dated Sept. 2 and released to The Associated Press on Thursday, details allegations involving the recruitment of the prep athletes, previously identified as Chadd Moore of Huntsville and Jackie Butler of McComb, Miss. Both signed with other schools.
Moore is now a sophomore point guard for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Butler committed to Tennessee for the 2004-05 season.
Moore and Butler played summer ball for AAU basketball coach Mark Komara of Huntsville, whom the NCAA alleges was a representative of Auburn and was involved in improper recruitment. Komara has said he was not a representative of Auburn and denied the NCAA allegations.
Auburn has denied that money or a car were offered to the two athletes. Auburn officials said that only "minor mistakes" involving campus visits were made and that they will "propose appropriate penalties."
MICHIGAN STATE: Freshman point guard Brandon Cotton is off Michigan State's basketball team and might transfer.
"I don't plan on him being back as a player," Spartans coach Tom Izzo said Thursday, adding that the decision to part ways was mutual.
