Events honoring Martin Luther King Jr.



Communities and organizations have planned these events to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

HAMILTON COUNTY

Clifton: The Health Alliance and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, in conjunction with the Baptist Ministers Conference of Greater Cincinnati and Vicinity, will hold the 32nd annual Memorial March and Ceremony to honor Dr. King at 11 a.m. today, his birthday. The march will begin at the Kresge Auditorium lobby of the UC Medical Sciences Building, at 231 Albert Sabin Way, and proceed to Dr. King's monument at Reading Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The theme of the ceremony is "Bridging the Gap." Cincinnati City Councilman Christopher Smitherman will be the keynote speaker. The event is free and open to the public.

Downtown: The Main Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, 800 Vine St., will present "Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day" with a variety of programs from 1-4 p.m. Monday. The programs, for all ages, are free and open to the public.

The Avondale branch library will have a program at 3 p.m. today, and the Walnut Hills branch will celebrate from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Bond Hill, Cheviot, Corryville, Delhi Township, Harrison, North Central, Northside, Pleasant Ridge, Price Hill, Reading, Roselawn and Wyoming branches also will present programs in honor of Dr. King at various times on Monday. Call your local branch for details.

Evanston: Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway, will present a Martin Luther King Celebration at 7 p.m. today. The keynote address will be, "Bridging the Gap: King Then and Now," by Bishop E. Lynn Brown. Information: 745-3877. St. Mark Catholic Church, 3500 Montgomery Road, will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Mass, including an acknowledgement program and reception at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Open to the public.

Loveland: The Loveland Shalom Initiative will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration, free and open to all, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brown Building at West Loveland and Carl Brown Way. The event will feature the St. Martin DePorres Church Choir of Lincoln Heights and "A Taste of Africa" prepared by Mary Newman and John Kachuba. Bring a salad or dessert to share. BUTLER COUNTY

West Chester Township: The West Chester Parks and Recreation Department will present "Live the Dream: Our Declaration of Unity" celebrating the life and message of Dr. King on Monday, with a March for Unity and a Live the Dream program.

Activities begin with the March for Unity at 1 p.m. when people will gather at the Greater Grace Church, 8781 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, and walk together to the West Chester Presbyterian Church, at 8930 Cincinnati-Dayton Road. A brief activity will follow.

The Live the Dream celebration, featuring music and guest speakers, will begin at 7 p.m. at Lakota West High School, 8940 Union Centre Blvd. Featured speakers are Kathy Klink, Lakota Schools superintendent; Eric Ellis, president and CEO of Integrity Development; and Gary Hines, president of the local NAACP.

KENTUCKY

Covington: The Northern Kentucky Regional Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Program, "Convene for the Dream Memorial Program," will take place at 6 p.m. Monday at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center, One W. Rivercenter Blvd. The event will feature music, recognitions and keynote speaker Spencer Crew, executive director and CEO of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

The program will be preceded by marches at 5 p.m. from the Peace Bell at Fifth and York streets, Newport, and the First Baptist Church, at Ninth and Greenup streets, Covington.

Erlanger: The Erlanger Branch Library, 401 Kenton Lands Road, will host "Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.," a program for children in grades 1-6 to honor Dr. King with crafts and stories, at 4 p.m. Monday. Information: (859) 962-4000.

Highland Heights: Northern Kentucky University will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Keynote Lecture from 12:15-1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Otto Budig Theater, located in the University Center, Louis B. Nunn Drive. Peace and civil rights activist Juanita Nelson will address "A Way of Life: Non-Violence, Peace and Justice." The lecture is free and open to the public.
