The Cincinnati Enquirer
DOWNTOWN - The investigation of an alleged racial slur by a Cincinnati police officer in 1999 has now expanded to the city solicitor's office.
The solicitor's office turned over a copy of a videotape containing the alleged slur to lawyers for two Cincinnati police officers suing the city in 2000.
The videotape shows Lt. Jeff Butler at the end of an interview with an internal affairs investigator say, "Can you get my gun for me so I can lock up some (inaudible)?"
City Manager Valerie Lemmie has asked a U.S. Secret Service audio lab to examine the tape to see if it can substantiate allegations that the inaudible word was a racial slur.
On Thursday, Solicitor J. Rita McNeil asked Earnest McAdams, the city's prosecutor, to investigate whether anyone in the Law Department viewed the tape prior to turning it over in the civil case, and whether they were aware it contained the slur.
