FAIRFIELD TWP. - Outdoor drama supporters are trying to stop a 59-acre housing development between the Butler County Technology and Career Development Schools on Ohio 4 and Rentschler Forest Preserve.
They will collect signatures on a referendum petition 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today at Fairfield North and Fairfield East schools, both on Morris Road.
The group needs 436 signatures of township voters by Friday to place a referendum on the ballot.
Township trustees approved a zoning change Dec. 23 from agricultural to residential so Fairfield Falls LLC could build about 100 homes on the property.
Butler County Heritage Park Project organizers want to use adjacent Butler County MetroParks property to build an amphitheatre for an outdoor 1860s drama.
Having new homes nearby would "make the location unusable" for an outdoor drama, during which cannons and muskets would be fired, says John Lawson, director of the project.
