BATAVIA - Steve Staton lost his November bid for Batavia School Board by 19 votes. But this past week he joined the board for its first meeting of the year anyway.
Staton was appointed to the board after Lee Cornett resigned in December.
Cornett was elected to the Batavia Township board of trustees in November.
Cornett, 61, who was on the board eight years, said he was interested in serving his community in a new capacity.
Staton, 43, who lost in a three-way race with incumbent Barb Bruner and newcomer Michael Enriquez, said he is concerned about the district's financial situation.
The board is working on cutting $800,000 to $1 million from the district budget and passing a 6.9-mill operating levy on the March ballot.
