UC's Gardner picked 13th in MLS draft; Adu is No. 1

University of Cincinnati junior midfielder Josh Gardner became the first Bearcat selected in the Major League Soccer draft when he was picked 13th overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday. Gardner gave up his final year of college eligibility to turn pro.
Freddy Adu, 14, was selected first by D.C. United.
Hockey
AHL DUCKS WIN: Alexei Smirnov scored in overtime to lift the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks over the Manitoba Moose 4-3 at the Gardens.
Anaheim recalled left wing Chris Kunitz and assigned center Tony Martensson to the AHL club. Kunitz leads Cincinnati with 31 points on a team-high 15 goals and 16 assists.
ECHL CLONES LOSE: Cincinnati (17-18-2) lost 4-1 to the Wheeling Nailers (26-10-2) the ECHL's best team. Cyclones forward Terry Marchant scored his 11th goal.
HOUSLEY RETIRES: Phil Housley, 39, the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history, retired after failing to sign with a team this season. The defenseman had 1,232 points on 338 goals and 894 assists in 1,495 games in 21 seasons. .
FRIDAY IN THE NHL: Rick Nash, league-leading goal scorer with 27, scored his second of the game in overtime to give Columbus a 3-2 win over Los Angeles, snapping the Blue Jackets' eight-game home winless skid.
Red Wings 3, Coyotes 3: Steve Yzerman became the seventh NHL player to reach 1,700 points and Henrik Zetterberg scored with 1:44 left in regulation to give Detroit a tie.
Hurricanes 4, Thrashers 3: Carolina's Jeff O'Neill broke out of a long slump with his second career hat trick. Kevyn Adams also scored for Carolina.
Wild 4, Penguins 2: Minnesota's Antti Laaksonen, Filip Kuba, Alexandre Daigle and Andrew Brunette scored in a 5:20 span midway through the third, spoiling Pittsburgh rookie goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's return to the NHL from the world junior championships.
Tennis
ADIDAS INTERNATIONAL: Third-seeded Amelie Mauresmo reached the final in Sydney, beating Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 7-6 (2) in a rain-delayed match. Mauresmo faces top-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne for the title.
Two-time champ Lleyton Hewitt faced third-seeded Carlos Moya in the men's final. Todd Woodbridge won his ATP Tour-record 79th doubles title, teaming with Jonas Bjorkman for a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Bob and Mike Bryan.

DIAMOND NOTES: Pitcher Kerry Wood agreed to a $9.75 million, one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, buying the two sides more time to work out a multiyear contract.. ... Outfielder Orlando Palmeiro agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract with the Houston Astros. ... Shortstop Rey Ordonez agreed to a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres. ... The Brewers will start the process of selling the team, which has been controlled by Bud Selig and his family since it moved to Milwaukee in 1970.
Auto racing
NASCAR: Mike Skinner will drive the No. 10 MB2 Motorsports Chevrolet in the Budweiser Shootout made-for-TV exhibition Feb. 7 in Concord, N.C. He does not have a full-time ride in the Nextel Cup Series.
Horse racing
TURFWAY PARK: The Lane's End Stakes, a prep for Kentucky Derby hopefuls, will air live on ESPN2 March 20. The $500,000 Grade II event will be part of Citgo Racing to the Triple Crown.
Today, stakes winners Down by the Sea and Leading Lioness and eight other 3-year-old fillies meet in the $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs.
