Akron president calls for help from auditor

From the state capitals

COLUMBUS - The Ohio auditor said Monday she will review the University of Akron's fiscal policies after a state watchdog report said an official used university money to pay for personal travel and computer repair.

University President Luis Proenza sent a letter to students, staff and others detailing his request of Auditor Betty Montgomery.

The auditor's office has agreed to review the allegations and, if necessary, make recommendations to help improve fiscal policies. Montgomery said she was pleased the school moved quickly to seek her help.

Proenza said Thomas Gaylord, a vice president for informational and instructional technologies, and two other university employees named in the report would be fired. They were placed on paid leave last week.

The request came a week after Inspector General Tom Charles released the report.

The report said that in addition to the travel and computer charges, Gaylord also billed the school for expenses he never incurred and accepted thousands of dollars from companies doing business with the university.

Gaylord, 50, who came to the university in February 2000, was paid $174,500 annually.

Fletcher pays tribute to King at ceremony

FRANKFORT - Gov. Ernie Fletcher joined hands with those around him and swayed right and left while singing "We Shall Overcome," during a ceremony remembering Martin Luther King Jr.

Fletcher spoke at Kentucky State University during one of many ceremonies around the state honoring the slain civil rights leader.

Since King's death, Kentucky and the nation have made strides in advancing civil rights, Fletcher told an audience of more than 300 people who gathered at the historically black university. But poverty and discrimination are still looming problems.

"Dr. King's dreams still long for the fullness of his vision of freedom," Fletcher said. "Ignorance, intolerance and discrimination still shackle opportunity for so many."
