HAMILTON - A former Butler County Sheriff's deputy will spend time behind bars for his sexual relationship with a teenage girl.
Dennis Schiavone Jr., 29, of Trenton, was sentenced Wednesday to six months in the Preble County Jail for his conduct with a 17-year-old girl he met while a school resource officer at Madison Junior/Senior High School.
He was also fined $1,000 and given a five-year probation term.
Schiavone pleaded guilty to charges of sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in November.
Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Megan Shanahan said Schiavone was given a 58-day credit toward his sentence for time served. He has been in jail since Nov. 24.
"This term was decided upon by the victim's family, law enforcement officers and the state of Ohio," Shanahan said, adding the decision was made "to keep the victim from the pains of going through a trial."
Schiavone faced a maximum of five years in jail.
Shanahan read a statement during sentencing on behalf of the victim's family. It emphasized the troubles they've experienced as a result of the incident and their current feelings toward Schiavone for what he did to their daughter.
While under the court's control, Schiavone must pay for the victim's psychological treatment, is forbidden contact with minors outside his family and cannot have contact with the victim, Shanahan said.
