HAMILTON - Greg Jolivette officially took his seat as a Butler County commissioner Thursday, but his predecessor wasn't forgotten.
On the commissioners' first vote, County Administrator Derek Conklin called the name of Courtney Combs - who replaced Jolivette on Wednesday as a state representative from the 54th district.
"Oh boy!" Conklin said, catching his gaffe. Conklin was hired 17 years ago, shortly after Combs became a commissioner.
Jolivette, former Hamilton mayor, was appointed to Combs' job Wednesday night by the Republic Party Central Committee. The two swapped places so the party could avoid a divisive, expensive primary battle with Commissioner Michael A. Fox.
Taking a seat next to his former political rival, Jolivette declared: "The chair feels good."
Jolivette and Fox each expressed a desire to work harmoniously. "I think we have a good team," Fox said.
Commission President Charles Furmon, Fox and Jolivette also praised Combs for his 17 years on the commission. "He (Combs) will be an asset to us in Columbus, as Greg Jolivette will be an asset to us here," Fox said.
Jolivette also acknowledged the "negative comments" made by some people about him, and about the political deal that prevented voters from deciding whom they wanted as commissioner.
"(People) can call me at any time with any concern they have. I stand ready and open to talk to anyone about my actions or my opinions," Jolivette said.
Combs' first day in Columbus was a busy one. After being sworn in at 2 p.m. Wednesday, he cast 15 votes and met with Gov. Bob Taft, a Republican from Hamilton County.
"Everyone has been very helpful, Democrats and Republicans," Combs said.
