Music, theater sampler real deal

CCM 'feast' to also feature wine, food

By Maggie Downs
The Cincinnati Enquirer

One sure way to get young professionals to your event: Give 'em a great deal at a discount.

That's what the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music is successfully doing at its annual fund-raiser, "A Movable Feast." The music and theater sampler takes place Jan. 30 at the Conservatory.

The clever pricing structure makes this event unique. Twentysomethings pay $20. Thirtysomethings shell out $30. Fortysomethings $40.

Everyone else? $75.

"From the moment this was originally conceived and produced, there was great focus on how to attract younger people to CCM," said Carrie Throm, director of development and external relations. "It makes a huge difference to offer it at a lower price."

At "A Movable Feast," party-goers create their own artistic menu, choosing from performances and backstage tours throughout the school. These include jazz, opera, musical theater, dance and more on several stages with 20-minute repeating shows, so party-goers can drop in wherever they like.

Between shows, guests can also sample food, desserts and wine.

"For a lot of young people who are treading water in the arts, it's a perfect chance to sample what's out there," said Sid D'Souza, 25, who is on the board of trustees for Friends of CCM. "People who have never had any experience in the arts can try them out during 20-minute shows without a big risk."

The Feast is not black tie. It's "casual glamorous," the invite says.

In 2003 - only the second year for the event - 132 twentysomethings and 47 thirtysomethings attended, out of a sold-out crowd that totaled 720.
