Weight program at hospital

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Clinton Memorial Hospital Regional Health System is offering a weight management program called "Lighten Up" that will meet weekly for seven sessions beginning Feb. 5. Participants must sign up and schedule a nutritional assessment for the week of Jan. 26. Call (937) 382-9606.

The program integrates traditional concepts of weight management such as nutrition and exercise with complementary approaches that include yoga, meditation, psychology and acupuncture. Group sessions will take place in the hospital classrooms at 761 Nelson Ave. Cost is $175.

Programs at Miami University

OXFORD - Miami University will be the site of several special programs next week:

Carol Anderson will speak on lynching and U.S. foreign policy at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 100 Laws Hall. Her speech is the inaugural presentation of the Miami University College of Arts and Science Celebrating Diversity Program. Free and open to the public. Information: 529-7592.

On Friday, Kevin Klose, president of National Public Radio, will visit the campus. He will be the special guest during a live broadcast of WMUB's Forum from the Marcum Conference Center at 7 p.m. News director Darrel Gray will conduct an interview with Klose and take questions from the audience, from e-mails (forum@wmub.org), and from callers (888) 877-3885.

Workshops for farmers

The Three Valley Conservation Trust will host workshops to help farmers and other landowners learn what is needed to meet application deadlines for several 2004 programs. Admission is free.

Sessions in Butler County take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at Okeana, Thursday at St. Aloysius Church, Chapel Road at Cincinnati-Brookville Road; and Hamilton, Feb.2, Izaak Walton League, 450 Beissinger Road.

Topics include changes in, and how to apply for, the Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (due March 31), Open Space Acquisition Program (due April 11), Preserving Family Lands and the Federal Grassland Protection Easement Program.

The Conservation Trust will host its annual meeting from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Izaak Walton League in Hamilton. Admission of $10 includes dinner. Among the keynote speakers are several county and state elected officials. The reservation deadline is Tuesday.

Grief support series offered

HAMILTON - The Hamilton Senior Center, 140 Ross Ave., will host a six-session grief support series and a single session program on eye-care basics. For information, call 867-1998.

The first meeting of the grief support series will take place at 12:30 p.m. Monday. Susan Birri, a registered nurse and wellness coordinator, will lead the group. The sessions are free for members of Senior Citizens Inc. Nonmembers may attend for $20, which includes a membership at centers in Hamilton, Fairfield and West Chester.

A single-session program on eye-care basics will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hamilton center. Although the presentation by ophthalmologist David R. Adam is free, reservations are required. Call Jeananne Dutze at 867-1998.

Training for weather spotters

BATAVIA - The Clermont County Emergency Management Agency will hold its annual weather-spotter training program at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of the University of Cincinnati Clermont College, 4200 Clermont College Drive.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Greg Tipton will focus on weather conditions that are conducive to tornado development, and how to recognize various types of clouds and other situations that can spawn dangerous weather conditions.

At the conclusion of the training, those interested will be given the opportunity to become weather spotters for the National Weather Service. Registration is required. Information and registration: 732-7661.

Learn to identify trees

CHILO - The Clermont County Park District will offer a winter tree identification program at noon Sunday at Chilo Lock No. 34 Park, off U.S. 52 at Ohio 222. Participants should meet at the naturalist's office. During the hike, they will learn how to identify trees by recognizing their buds, bark and branches. Information: 876-9013.
