NBA: Magic take advantage of Sixers' injury woes

Coleman out at least six weeks after breaking finger

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Tracy McGrady scored 33 points, and the Orlando Magic defeated Philadelphia 98-93 Friday night as the 76ers lost starters Derrick Coleman and Kenny Thomas to injuries.

Without those two in the lineup, the Magic built a 13-point lead in the second quarter. Gordan Giricek scored the final seven points of the third quarter to make it 69-58. He finished with 19.

Juwan Howard scored 18, and Keith Bogans added 13 points for the Magic.

The Sixers rallied late as John Salmons made two driving layups and Kyle Korver hit a 3-pointer to cap a 13-4 run. Allen Iverson sank an 18-footer to make it 81-79, but that was as close as the Sixers would get.

McGrady scored on a fast-break layup, then stole the ball from Iverson and turned that into two free throws to stretch the lead back to eight. Korver, who finished with 12 points, hit another 3 to make it 87-84, but the Magic sealed the win from the line.

Iverson scored 30, and Glenn Robinson had 20 for the Sixers, who have already had an injury-plagued year.

Coleman will be out at least six weeks after breaking his right pinkie late in the first quarter. It wasn't clear when Coleman was hurt, but he was flexing his hand during one of the final timeouts of the first quarter.

Coleman had the finger placed in a cast.

Thomas sustained a corneal abrasion in his left eye after taking an elbow from Zaza Pachulia while the two went for a rebound.

Heat 85, Nets 64

MIAMI - Wang Zhi-Zhi outscored Jason Kidd and sparked Miami to a victory over New Jersey, which lost its fifth in a row.

With starting center Brian Grant slowed by a knee bruise, the 7-foot-1 Wang came off the bench in the first half and finished with 11 points in 11 minutes, matching his point total for the season.

Kidd shot 4-for-19 and finished with nine points, nine rebounds and eight assists. The Nets, who had won five in a row against Miami, shot just 29 percent.

The victory margin was the Heat's most lopsided this season.

The Nets' losing streak is their longest since April 2001. They still lead the Atlantic Division with a 21-20 record at the halfway point in their season.

Celtics 100, Wizards 89

BOSTON - Paul Pierce scored 24 points, Mike James added 16 and Boston held off a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Washington.

The Wizards, who trailed 78-59 at the end of the third quarter, used a 24-10 run sparked by seven points from Juan Dixon and six from Christian Laettner to pull to 88-83.

Pierce answered with a jumper and, after a miss by Laettner, Ricky Davis hit a 3-pointer to give the Celtics a 93-83 lead.

Knicks 96, Hawks 94

ATLANTA - Stephon Marbury banked in a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute, his second one down the stretch, and New York held on to beat Atlanta.

Atlanta's Jason Terry missed an open 3 that would have tied it with about 10 seconds left, and Kurt Thomas made two free throws to clinch it. The Knicks have won five of six since Lenny Wilkens replaced Don Chaney as coach.

Marbury finished with 24 points. Shandon Anderson didn't play for New York, snapping his streak of consecutive games at 543, which was the NBA's top active streak.

Bryant attorney raises race issue

Kobe Bryant's attorney suggested in open court Friday that the Los Angeles Lakers star might have been falsely accused of rape because he is black. The comment from attorney Pamela Mackey came during a legal squabble over the notes of a rape crisis center worker who sat in on a police interview with Bryant's 19-year-old accuser. Inga Causey, attorney for the Resource Center of Eagle County (Colo.), said releasing more details about Bryant's accuser would lead to fewer women reporting rapes. She said rape reports dropped in Florida after William Kennedy Smith was acquitted, a case in which his accuser's medical background was targeted by defense attorneys. Mackey urged the judge to focus on the Bryant case and avoid the "political agenda of the rape crisis center." Said Mackey: "There is lots of history about black men being falsely accused of this crime by white women." Mackey did not discuss the race issue further. Judge Terry Ruckriegle said he would decide later whether to hold a full hearing on turning over the notes to the defense.

NETS SALE: The New Jersey Nets were officially sold Friday to a Brooklyn developer intent on moving them across the Hudson River - a move immediately hailed in New York for returning big-time sports to the borough.

CELTICS: Vin Baker was suspended indefinitely by Boston on Friday for failing to comply with his aftercare program.

It's the second time this season that Baker, who struggled with alcoholism last spring, has been suspended by the team for failing to comply with his recovery program. On Jan. 7, he was suspended for three games.

The team said it was notified of the violation by a doctor jointly selected by Baker and the team to oversee his aftercare. The Celtics did not specify the nature of the violation.
