Top 25: Duke cruises past Hoyas

No. 4 UConn upset at home

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Shelden Williams had a career-high 26 points and Chris Duhon added 17 for No. 1 Duke in an 85-66 victory over Georgetown on Saturday.

Williams finished 12-for-15 from the field, and his jumper at the first-half buzzer was his first 3-pointer of this season. Duhon was 7-for-9, and J.J. Redick added 15 points for the Blue Devils (16-1), who shot 61 percent in the first half and 56 percent for the game to win their 13th straight.

Brandon Bowman scored 19 points for the Hoyas (11-4), who have lost four of five. Georgetown lost to the No. 1 team for the second time in 10 days, having lost 94-70 at then-top ranked Connecticut on Jan. 14.

---

No. 3 Saint Joseph's 114, St. Bonaventure 63

OLEAN, N.Y. - Jameer Nelson was perfect from the field, hitting all six attempts for 19 points, and so remains No. 3 Saint Joseph's.

Delonte West had 21 points, allowing the Hawks (17-0, 7-0 Atlantic-10) to set a school record with their 17th consecutive win. Pat Carroll added 17 points in a game that was decided 8 minutes in when the Hawks scored 15 straight points to open a 20-3 lead.

Kern Carter had 14 points for St. Bonaventure (6-10, 2-3), which missed 17 of its first 18 shots.

---

Providence 66, No. 4 Connecticut 56

HARTFORD, Conn. - Ryan Gomes had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Providence to its fifth straight victory.

The Friars (13-3, 4-1 Big East) are 2-1 against ranked teams this season and handed the Huskies (15-3, 3-1) their first conference loss of the season.

Emeka Okafor had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies, who shot 40.7 percent from the field, their second lowest mark of the season.

---

No. 7 North Carolina 96, Virginia 77

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Rashad McCants scored 26 points to lead six North Carolina players in double figures.

Sean May scored 17 points for the Tar Heels (12-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who improved to 17-2 against the Cavaliers in the Smith Center. Raymond Felton added 11 points and eight assists.

Devin Smith scored 16 points to lead Virginia (12-5, 2-4), while J.R. Reynolds added 15.

---

No. 8 Pittsburgh 66, No. 13 Syracuse 45

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Chris Taft and Mark McCarroll scored 15 points apiece, and Pittsburgh held Syracuse to its lowest point total in 36 years.

It was the fewest points the Orangemen have scored since losing 71-41 at Kansas in 1968. Syracuse's previous low in the 24-year history of the Carrier Dome was set in a 51-50 loss to Connecticut on Jan. 16, 1988.

Chevon Troutman had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers (19-1, 5-1 Big East), who bounced back from their only loss of the season at Connecticut on Monday.

Syracuse (13-3, 3-2), which lost its second straight game, was led by Hakim Warrick with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

---

N.C. State 76, No. 11 Georgia Tech 72

RALEIGH, N.C. - Scooter Sherrill scored 18 points and Ilian Evtimov had 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead North Carolina State.

The Wolfpack (11-4, 4-1) improved to 10-0 at home and grabbed sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference behind top-ranked Duke.

Will Bynum scored 17 points for Georgia Tech (15-3, 3-2), which lost its eighth straight game at N.C. State.

Georgia Tech battled back from a 16-point deficit in the second half to cut it to 54-52 with 9:59 remaining but Sherrill got loose for a layup and Levi Watkins made a 3-pointer to help hold off the Yellow Jackets.

---

No. 24 Oklahoma St. 72, No. 16 Texas 67

AUSTIN, Texas - Joey Graham had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Cowboys, who ended the Longhorns' 25-game home winning streak.

Graham had three huge dunks as Oklahoma State (14-2, 4-1 Big 12) became the first visiting team to win in the Frank Erwin Center since the Cowboys beat the Longhorns on Feb. 20, 2002, coach Eddie Sutton's 700th career victory.

Royal Ivey scored 14 points for Texas (12-3, 3-1), which missed half of its 20 free throws. Texas was 2-of-9 from the line over the last 4 minutes as the Longhorns tried to erase a 10-point deficit.

No. 17 Florida 68, Auburn 52

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - David Lee scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half to lead Florida.

Lee, held to 1-for-6 shooting in the first half, triggered the victory for the Gators (12-4, 3-2 Southeastern Conference), who had lost two straight games by double digits.

Anthony Roberson hit his first six shots and led the Gators with 21 points, 16 in the first half.

Marco Killingsworth had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Auburn (11-6, 2-4).

---

No. 18 Texas Tech 80, Texas A&M 78

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Andre Emmett scored 23 points, including the go-ahead basket with 6 seconds to play, and Texas Tech won its 12th straight.

The Red Raiders (16-2, 4-0 Big 12) led by 12 points late in the first half, but the Aggies (7-8, 0-4) stayed in it in the second half.

There were seven ties in the second half, the last at 78-78 on a putback by Jesse King of the Aggies after a long miss by Leandro Garcia-Morales with 20 seconds to play.

---

No. 19 Mississippi St. 71, Georgia 58

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Lawrence Roberts scored 17 points and Timmy Bowers added 15 points and nine assists for Mississippi State, which opened the game with a 19-0 run.

The Bulldogs (16-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) held Georgia scoreless for the game's first 8 minutes and never trailed. Georgia (9-7, 1-4) didn't get its first field goal until Rashad Wright's 3-pointer with about 10:40 left in the first half.

Damien Wilkins had 17 points for Georgia.

---

No. 20 Oklahoma 61, Kansas St. 49

NORMAN, Okla. - Jason Detrick scored 24 points for Oklahoma, which ended its longest losing streak in five years.

The Sooners (11-4, 1-3 Big 12) hadn't won in three weeks, a four-game skid with an average margin of 18 points. Before Saturday's game, it was announced that starting forward Kevin Bookout would miss the rest of the season after deciding to have shoulder surgery.

MADISON, Wis. - Devin Harris scored a career-high 30 points and Mike Wilkinson added a career-high 24 for Wisconsin.

Harris and Wilkinson were a combined 19-of-30 from the field as the Badgers (13-3, 4-1 Big Ten) shot 52 percent to win their 24th straight home game and improve to 20-0 in conference home games under coach Bo Ryan.

Roger Powell scored a career-high 24 points to lead Illinois (12-5, 3-3), which has lost 11 of its last 12 games - including five straight - in Madison.

---

Arkansas 70, No. 22 Vanderbilt 62

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Freshman guard Ronnie Brewer scored a season-high 21 points and Jonathon Modica matched that for Arkansas as Vanderbilt lost its third straight Southeastern Conference road game.

Junior Michael Jones tied a career high with 18 points and had seven rebounds in his first start of the season for the Razorbacks (10-7, 2-4).

Matt Freije had 19 points and seven rebounds for Vanderbilt (13-3, 2-3), which slipped to 1-3 since opening the season with 12 straight wins.

---

No. 25 South Carolina 61, LSU 55

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Carlos Powell had 12 points, including South Carolina's only 3-pointer of the game with 1:38 left, to lead the Gamecocks past LSU.
