We're sending our volunteer Fashion Panel members to the shelves from time to time to test whether beauty products live up to their advertised promises. Here are the results of Julie Hewetson's trial of a quick teeth-whitening kit.
Product: Rembrandt 2-Hour White kit.
Promise: "Dramatically whitens teeth when used as directed ... with extended use, has been shown in research to safely reverse the effects of nine years of yellowing and staining."
Tester: Julie Hewetson of Lawrenceburg.
Cost: $19.99
The search: "Found it on first try at Walgreens in the toothpaste and whitening product section."
Directions: "Very easy to follow. Remove two mouth trays (like sports mouth guards) and apply product from two syringes on edge of each tray. Put in mouth 20 minutes, remove and wait 10 minutes, then repeat the process, changing about every half hour for a two-hour period."
Performance: "It had a minty flavor and gel-like consistency with no burning or discomfort."
Results: "I see a two-shade difference in the whiteness of my teeth but nothing remarkable. I do have sensitive teeth and that increased, but faded as the following day progressed."
Rating: On a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being tops, "I would give it a 7."
Reuse? "I might be inclined to try it again, but I think I'd talk to my dentist first."
