Ex-Packers GM Wolf will assist Cleveland
The Associated Press
CLEVELAND - Former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf said Wednesday that he has accepted a job with Cleveland as a personnel specialist.
Wolf said he would evaluate players on a part-time basis for coach Butch Davis while working from his home in Annapolis, Md.
"I'm not a decision-maker or anything like that. Whatever little task Butch has for me to do, I'll do," Wolf said by telephone from his home.
The Browns are expected to announce Wolf's appointment today.
Wolf, 65, retired in 2001 after 11 years as Green Bay's executive vice president and general manager. He is under contract as a Packers consultant through May.
LIONS: Former Bears coach Dick Jauron decided to join the Detroit Lions because of Steve Mariucci.
Jauron was formally introduced as defensive coordinator Wednesday. Though he drew plenty of interest from around the league, Mariucci made all the difference.
"I love Steve's approach to the game and the way he deals with players and the way they respond to him," he said.
Jauron was fired Dec. 29 after four losing seasons in five years with the Bears. The NFL Coach of the Year two seasons ago, he had a 35-46 overall record, including one playoff loss.
PACKERS: Green Bay promoted assistant Bob Slowik to defensive coordinator and hired former Detroit Lions assistant Kurt Schottenheimer as defensive backs coach Wednesday.
Slowik replaces Ed Donatell, who was fired Jan. 16 after the Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs.
"I don't want to just blow up our defense and start over again," coach Mike Sherman said. "There's some things we do well. The players understand what we want to get done. It's just that I feel like the leadership for our defense, at this present time, needed to go in a different direction."
CHIEFS: Kansas City hired former Ohio State assistant Fred Pagac as linebackers coach Wednesday. He was OSU's defensive coordinator from 1996-99.
