Explain yourself: UC's new 'recruits'

This week, two prospective University of Cincinnati football players recruited by the former UC coach Rick Minter committed to other universities after feeling unsure of their status with the new coach, Mark Dantonio. One of them, Harrison High lineman Jeff Browning, made an oral commitment to Ohio University. Browning was quoted as saying, "They just weren't telling me anything. I still don't know what's going on with them. I'm not even going to worry about it." Evan Spanogians, a 6-5, 300-pound offensive lineman from Lakota West High, committed to South Carolina after originally committing to UC. Brian Teter, associate athletic director for external relations, offered an explanation:.

Q. What is UC's response to allegations made by former recruits that their recruiting status was in limbo and altered their college plans?

A. This is a situation where there was a window where the old staff made a verbal commitment to players. The new staff came in and restarted the recruiting process. The unique thing about this is that it is not gonna happen again. Once a kid is offered a scholarship, we are going to honor it. We are not in the business of reneging on a scholarship offers. The was a unique window where a coach came in with a month to go in the recruiting process, and he started the re-recruiting process. It's a two-way street. Our new staff had to get to know these kids and the kids had to get to know our staff. The other thing to remember is our football coach has stayed consistent with everybody. He hasn't wavered one bit. There have been no games being played, and he's been on the straight with all these guys.

Do you know of a position, vote or statement made by a public officials that you'd like him or her to explain? Send ideals to assistant editorial page editor Ray Cooklis at rcoolis@enquirer.com; phone (513) 768-8525.
