Ex-election worker gets 21/2-year term
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The former treasurer of U.S. Rep. John Boehner's re-election fund was sentenced to 21/2 years in prison Thursday for embezzling more than $600,000 in campaign contributions.
Russell E. Roberts, 36, pleaded guilty in October to taking the funds and then lying to the Federal Election Commission on campaign reports to cover up the theft. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sandra Beckwith.
Prosecutors say Roberts systematically embezzled contributions to the Friends of John Boehner fund between 1994 and 2003, transferring the money into his personal account. They say at least some of the money was electronically withdrawn at gambling casinos in Indiana.
