Led by Redick, Duke ends Seminoles' run

The Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. - The play wasn't designed for Chris Duhon, but the senior wanted to take the big shot.

With Florida State trailing by just two in the final minute, Duhon drained a 3-pointer with 36.4 seconds to play, helping No. 1 Duke hold off the Seminoles 56-49 Thursday night.

J.J. Redick scored 24 points to lead the Blue Devils (17-1, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won 14 straight overall and 37 in a row at home. Sean Dockery went scoreless but had two big steals late as Duke remained the only unbeaten team in ACC play.

"This is my team, it's my senior year," said Duhon, who scored 11 points. "I just wanted to take the big shot. I was looking to take the shot the whole time."

Tim Pickett had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Seminoles (14-6, 3-4), who were trying to beat a top 10 team in three straight games for the first time in school history. Florida State, which had beaten North Carolina and Wake Forest in the last week, fell to 0-14 all-time at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Seminoles had beaten the Blue Devils at home in each of the past two seasons. But they had never fared well at Cameron, losing their 13 previous games by an average of 21 points per game.

They hung around most of the way Thursday, playing scrappy defense and giving Duke one of its toughest challenges since taking the No. 1 ranking two weeks ago.

No. 19 Wake Forest 93, Maryland 85

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Chris Paul scored 25 points to help No. 19 Wake Forest snap its four-game losing streak to beat Maryland.

The Demon Deacons (12-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) had struggled mightily with their scoring during their losing streak as Paul and fellow guard Justin Gray had not been able to find an offensive rhythm.

But the two snapped out of it against Maryland (11-6, 2-4) and helped Wake Forest overcome a 10-point halftime deficit.

MARYLAND (11-6)-Caner-Medley 6-13 0-0 15, Ibekwe 3-5 1-2 8, Smith 5-9 0-0 10, Gilchrist 3-11 4-6 12, McCray 3-5 3-4 9, Garrison 2-6 8-10 13, Strawberry 1-2 1-2 3, Jones 3-5 2-2 11, Bowers 0-0 2-2 2, Fofana 0-2 2-2 2. Totals 26-58 23-30 85.

No. 10 Gonzaga 85, San Diego 73

SAN DIEGO - Cory Violette scored 10 of his 20 points during a 16-4 run to close the first half and No. 10 Gonzaga rallied from an 11-point deficit to beat San Diego.

Adam Morrison also scored 20 for Gonzaga (16-2, 6-0 West Coast Conference), which won its ninth straight game. Ronny Turiaf had 18 and Blake Stepp 11.

It was the first time the teams played since San Diego upset Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference tournament championship game here on March 10 to reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in 16 seasons.

No. 2 Stanford 62, Oregon St. 48

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Josh Childress had 17 points and Stanford stayed unbeaten with a victory over Oregon State.

The Cardinals trailed 31-29 early in the second half before pulling away. Stanford (17-0, 8-0 Pacific-10) and No. 3 St. Joseph's are the only undefeated teams in Division I.

It was Stanford's ninth straight victory overall against the Beavers (8-10, 2-6) and fifth in a row at Gill Coliseum.

Washington 96, No. 9 Arizona 83

SEATTLE - Nate Robinson scored a career-high 31 points on an 11-of-15 shooting effort and directed a thrilling second-half charge as Washington stunned Arizona.

Robinson had a highlight-reel night for the Huskies (8-8, 3-5 Pac-10) that included an alley-oop dunk by the diminutive point guard, who is generously listed at 5-foot-9. He also had a key rebound and putback basket and an array of steals.

VANDERBILT: Coach Kevin Stallings apologized Thursday for comments he made about a fight that resulted in two players being ejected in a loss to South Carolina.

"While at no time will we accept cheap shots from the opponent, it was unsportsmanlike and unprofessional of me to condone or promote such tactics by our players," Stallings said in a statement.

"Fighting and unsportsmanlike behavior have no place in the great game of college basketball. I want our team to play the game as hard as possible but also expect they will play within the letter and spirit of the rules."

The teams meet again in Columbia, S.C., on Feb. 14. South Carolina coach Dave Odom did not issue a statement Thursday but is to meet with the media today.

The school said Odom was reviewing tapes of the fight.

PURDUE: Forward Kenneth Lowe has a sprained left elbow and is listed as day-to-day, the Boilermakers announced.
