Nick turns 30; Carmen dresses up

By Lauren Bishop / The Cincinnati Enquirer

SYCAMORE GRAD HELPS EDIT SHOW

Sycamore High School graduate Abby Wilson probably knows more about the private lives of pop singers Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, stars of MTV's Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, than anyone.

That's because, as the assistant story editor for the show, Wilson spends about eight hours a day watching unedited footage of Lachey and Simpson.

Her job, based out of one of MTV's Los Angeles offices, entails writing down good possible story lines.

"It's kind of creepy, actually," the 23-year-old says.

She says most of the events that don't make it onto the show aren't that exciting.

"It's just Nick and Jessica sitting on the couch watching TV for hours on end or falling asleep."

A 2002 graduate of New York University, Wilson began working on Newlyweds in May. After weeks of watching Lachey and Simpson on screen, she met them in person when she and other staffers were invited to Simpson's record release party in Las Vegas last summer.

"They're both very nice," she says of the couple. "They're both very shy, also."

Wilson's stint on Newlyweds will last at least until this June or July, unless the show returns for a third season. "I think it's a great position," she says.

Thirtieth birthdays have got to be worse than 40th birthdays, former Cincinnatian Nick Lachey said on the second episode of the new season of MTV's Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.

"Because to me, it's like, when you turn 30, there's no room for immaturity anymore," he said on Wednesday night's episode.

In a classic bit of editing, Nick then pulled the leg of his shorts over his sitting wife's head, while still wearing them.

His presents included a $35 check from his grandmother; a baseball signed by former Reds second baseman Joe Morgan from Nick's brother, Drew; a promise of a keg of Miller Lite a month from Jessica; a lingerie-clad Jessica jumping out of a cake; and a $55,000 diamond-encrusted watch, also from Jessica.

Looks like the pop singers might need the extra income from the March 28 variety show they're hosting on ABC and their separate, still-in-development shows on the network.

An, on the second episode of 'Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave, which follows Nick and Jessica on MTV, White Oak native Carmen Electra and now-new husband Dave Navarro grappled with flower and cake decisions for their Nov. 22 nuptials.

Dave was adamant that Carmen should carry all red roses, prompting Carmen to joke that he was the bride. (But she noted that while her ex-husband Dennis Rodman was prone to wearing dresses, Dave would wear a suit for the ceremony.)

Carmen also got fitted for her wedding dress.Later, Carmen saw Dave off to tour Europe with his band, Jane's Addiction.

Reruns of both shows air throughout the week (visit mtv.com for listings). Two new half-hour episodes air Wednesday, starting at 10 p.m.
