Black History Month events around region



February is Black History Month. Here are some events unfolding in Greater Cincinnati:

DELHI - 3 p.m. todayThe first of several events at the College of Mount St. Joseph: "Shattered Dreams: What Would Dr. King Say Today?" Other events: 1 p.m. Feb. 16, "Oh, How They Lived - Stories of the Negro Baseball League"; 7 p.m. Feb. 28, "Cultural Awareness Night." FORT THOMAS - 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Thomas branch of the Campbell County Public Library, 1000 Highland Ave.: "American Girl: Addy and the Underground Railroad." Songs, stories, snacks and a craft for elementary school children. To register: (859) 572-5033.

EVANSTON - 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Schiff Family Conference Center in the Cintas Center. "Personal Histories: Struggles, Triumphs and Lessons Learned." Speakers include: Ed Rigaud, president of the Freedom Center, and five others. Sponsors: Xavier University's Williams College of Business, the National Underground Freedom Center, Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and Procter & Gamble. To register: 579-3111.

SILVERTON - 7 p.m. each Friday in February at God's Provisions Christian Resource Center, 7426 Montgomery Road, "Exploring Biblical Black History." To register: 794-0079.

COVINGTON - 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Mary Ann Morgan Branch, Kenton County Public Library, 502 Scott Blvd. Story time about Bessie Coleman.

CLIFTON - 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Longtime community and civil rights activist Donald Spencer and former Cincinnati city councilwoman Marian Spencer will speak at the college's Conference Center.

ERLANGER - 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Erlanger branch of the Kenton County Public Library, 401 Kenton Lands Rd. The history of slavery and the Underground Railroad, presented by the Cincinnati Museum Center.

DAYTON, Ohio - 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Modern Flight Gallery at the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The Air Force Band of Flight will perform "Heritage, Hearts and Heroes." For information, call (937) 255-8046, ext. 312.

HEBRON - 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Lents Branch of the Boone County Public Library, 3215 Cougar Path. Prince Brown Jr. from Northern Kentucky University's Institute for Freedom Studies, will discuss the Underground Railroad as an African-American response to slavery.

COLD SPRING - 4 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Cold Spring branch of the Campbell County Public Library at 3920 Alexandria Pike: "American Girl: Addy and the Underground Railroad." Songs, stories, snacks and a craft for elementary school children. To register, call (859) 781-6166, ext. 23.
