PLEASANT RIDGE - The parish priest who angered many parents in November when he fired the principal of Nativity School has requested a reassignment and is leaving the parish.
"Fr. R. Mark Sherlock, pastor of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pleasant Ridge, today communicated to parish leaders that he will begin a month-long sabbatical Feb. 26 and that his request for a new assignment has been accepted," three parish members said in news release Wednesday night.
The release was signed by Joe Muenchen, chair, Parish Pastoral Council; Greg Bell, chair, Education Commission, and Mike Garry, president, Parent Teacher Association.
Sherlock fired longtime school principal Bob Herring in November, citing "differences in philosophy."
Church donations declined about $8,000 in the three weeks following Herring's firing.
Herring was reinstated on Dec. 17.
Herring declined comment Wednesday night on Sherlock's departure from the parish.
