Davis Cup play begins Friday
Andy Roddick tasted Grand Slam success and was ranked No. 1. One gap on his resume? A Davis Cup title, something he and the United States can move closer to by beating Austria in a first-round match in Uncasville, Conn. The draw for the best-of-five match is today. There are two singles matches each Friday and Sunday, with doubles Saturday. Roddick (above) is joined on the U.S. team by Robby Ginepri and the doubles pairing of twins Bob and Mike Bryan. Mardy Fish is the reserve. The United States has won the international competition a record 31 times - but not since 1995.
Indy secures future Final Fours
Indianapolis will host the men's and women's Final Fours and preliminary rounds of the NCAA Tournament on a five-year cycle through 2039 under an agreement announced Wednesday. The city, home to the NCAA's headquarters, must meet certain milestones for the NCAA to continue bringing the events to Indianapolis, the NCAA said. Future NCAA championships already scheduled to take place in Indianapolis include the women's Final Four in 2005 and the men's Final Four in 2006 and 2010.
Cincinnati vies for women's event
Cincinnati is among 18 U.S. communities trying to land the WUSA Soccer Festivals in June. The professional women's soccer league folded last year but hopes to relaunch with eight teams in 2005. The festivals, which will be staged as weekend doubleheaders, will feature U.S. national team stars and international standouts who played in the WUSA. Other cities that hope to host the games include Cleveland, Chicago and Columbus. Venues will be announced this month.
