Student died after painkiller overdose
KENT, Ohio - An accidental overdose of prescription painkillers caused the death of a Kent State student whose body was discovered in her dorm room, the Portage County coroner has ruled.
Coroner Roger G. Marcial said high amounts of the pain killer hydrocodone were detected in the body of 29-year-old Julie Hogan, whose body was found Dec. 2.
Hogan was seriously burned in a 1999 house fire and was taking four medications, Marcial said.
He said this can happen when a person has chronic pain.
"They just forget that they've taken one already, and then they take another one. Then they get dopey and take more and more, unfortunately," Marcial said.
