Skin cream delivers, but it's pricey

Real trial

We're sending our volunteer Fashion Panel members to the shelves from time to time to test whether advertised beauty products live up to their promises. Here are the results of Julia Shewchuk's trial of Elizabeth Arden Overnight Success Skin Renewal Serum.

Promise: "Apply at night. Wake up to proven results. Dry flakes are swept away. You'll see more even-toned, less blotchy, truly fresher skin. In tests, 92 percent of women found skin look resurfaced, more radiant and even tones."

Tester: Julia Shewchuk, 44, of Union.

The search: "Purchased at first department store I went to, Belk's in Valdosta, Ga. But every Lazarus-Macy's and Dillard's nearby has it."

Cost: $45.

Ease of use: "Application could not have been easier. The serum's consistency is a smooth, cool cream. A little bit (pea size) goes a long way. And it feels good after I applied it. No mess, no fuss, no grease."

Instructions: "The store had a pamphlet displayed explaining the effect and how long it would take for visible effects (four weeks). I didn't see the pamphlet anywhere else."

Product performance: "It definitely produced a more even-toned skin ... and also seems to plump up my skin so it doesn't look as dry. Lines seem less noticeable and skin looks firmer. It took two weeks for this effect. And it smells absolutely wonderful. Every night my husband would tell me how good I smelled."

Rank: "On a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being tops, I would give it an 9 because it does what it promises. Not a 10 because of the price."

Value: "It is expensive but I would say it's worth the money because the product did produce a more even skin tone and my skin looks stronger and firmer . . . therefore, fewer lines which is more important to me now that I'm in my 40s. I also love the smell."

Re-use? "I would buy it again because I am very happy with the results. So much so that I will also try the complementing products for moisturizing and daytime use."
