The two candidates in the March 2 Republican primary race for Clermont County's 14th Senate District are long on experience.
Going head-to-head in the 14th District, a seat being vacated by Ohio Senate President Doug White, are state Reps. Jean Schmidt and Tom Niehaus.
Both Schmidt, a Republican from Miami Township, and Niehaus, a Republican from New Richmond, are vacating their House seats because of term limits.
Niehaus, campaigning on themes of lower taxes, fiscal responsibility, better schools and improving opportunities for small business owners and farmers, is endorsed by White and former state Rep. Rose Vesper.
"I make it a point to stay in touch with the residents in my districts," Niehaus said. "Right now, people want to talk about their tax burden. They are very clear in telling me they can't afford more taxes."
Schmidt, who has a history of public service in the local and state arenas, is campaigning on her record. Touting her tough stance on crime, she points to her successful efforts, which helped to expand Megan's Law in Ohio, as well as her ongoing work to legalize concealed carry in Ohio.
Ohio Treasurer Joe Deters and Speaker of the House Larry Householder, R-Glenford, endorse her. She also has endorsements from the Ohio Taxpayers Association and Ohio Right to Life.
"My platform is simple: I will strive to make Southern Ohio the best area in the state.
"I will work to make our communities safe and prosperous, great places to live, work and play," Schmidt said, adding that she has been a watchdog for economic development.
The primary winner will face Democrat Paul Schwietering in November.
