Rum cider packs warm punch

My favorite place to sled ride is Rapid Run Park in West Price Hill, where, at the bottom of the steepest incline, a lake freezes over every winter.

Sometimes ice skaters grace the lake, but they must be on guard for daredevils on runner sleds, who race down the hill, zoom over a ramp fashioned of snow, become airborne, then smash down onto the ice and skid along the lake's surface. I get chills just watching, let alone whenever a friend talks me into riding down double.

One snowy day, to celebrate conquering the hill, I used 70-proof Kuya Fusion Rum as the base for a sledding-party punch. Kuya ($14.30) is infused with citrus and spicy vanilla flavors guaranteed to please the palate even as the rum warms your toes and cheeks.

Kuya Cider Rum Punch

1 cup Kuya Fusion Rum

8 cups apple cider

4 cups cranberry juice

3 cinnamon sticks

4 cloves

3 strips orange peel

Put all ingredients except rum into large pot. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes. Line strainer with cheesecloth and strain punch. Put 1 to 2 tablespoons rum into each mug, then fill to rim with hot punch. Makes 12 drinks.
