Colonials pull within a game of Flyers

George Washington 66, Dayton 64

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - T.J. Thompson's driving layup with 1.2 seconds to play lifted George Washington to a 66-64 win over Dayton and tightened up the race in the Atlantic 10 West.

Thompson, who had made just one previous shot from the floor in the second half, started his winning drive from just inside half court and converted with the right hand to extend George Washington's home winning streak to 14.

The win moves the Colonials (15-8, 9-3 Atlantic 10) within a game of the Flyers (20-5, 10-2), who had won 10 of 11 and five straight over George Washington.

Ramod Marshall, who scored 13 points for Dayton, hit two free throws with eight seconds left and tied the game at 64. However, the Flyers couldn't stop Thompson's drive to the basket or even get a look at the win in the second that followed.

Mike Hall led the Colonials with 16 points, but it was Thompson and Omar Williams (13 points) that hit several big shots.

George Washington trailed 57-50 with 8:24 to play before Williams scored nine of the next 14 for the Colonials, including a tip-in with 17.3 seconds left that put George Washington ahead 64-62.

Thompson hit a big shot at the end of the first half as well - a 3-pointer at the buzzer - to give George Washington a 39-30 halftime lead.

Dayton, which shot just 35 percent in the first half, watched that deficit grow as high as 10 before going on an 18-4 run to take a 48-44 lead with 13:04 to play.

Sean Finn finished with 13 points.
