The Early Word

Jump on your weekend

Last Minute

Midori and more: It's a don't-miss Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert when Midori performs the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Paavo Jarvi conducts Stravinsky's frenzied ballet score The Rite of Spring. Get there at 6:15 p.m. today for a free dinner buffet before the 7:30 p.m. concert in Music Hall. (It repeats at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday with the Japanese Sakura Ladies Chorus as preconcert entertainment.) Tickets: $13.75-$56.75. 381-3300 or www.cincinnatisymphony.org.

Replacement found: Cincinnati Opera has announced that soprano Catherine Malfitano will sing the title role in Bizet's Carmen in the Summer Festival season. She replaces mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, who is expecting her first child in June.

Malfitano, who riveted Cincinnatians in last summer's opera "triple bill," will be singing her first Spanish temptress in performances July 17, 20, 23 and 25 in Music Hall. Subscriptions are on sale now; single tickets go on sale in May. 241-2742 or www.cincinnatiopera.org.

Dove nominee: Former Cincinnatian Chris Estes has been nominated for a Dove Award for Rock Recorded Song of the Year. Now a Nashville-based producer and writer, Estes earned the nomination for "All About You," which he co-wrote with singer Nate Sallie and which hit No. 2 on Christian rock radio in 2003. Estes started Bestes Music Productions in Cincinnati four years ago and is managing the Cincinnati-based acts Ashley Peacock and Nine Ways Out.

The Gospel Music Association's 35th annual Dove Awards will be presented April 28.
