Who needs a runway or Vogue spread when your have Sex and the City to depend on for your weekly couture fix?
No matter your taste - Charlotte's country club femininity, Miranda's professional suits, Samantha's tarty classics or Carrie's grab-bag chic - there's something for everyone on the show as long as stilettos finish the look.
At Sunday's end, will fashionistas turn back to the magazine racks?
Clothes play such a starring role in the show that the HBO Web site, www.hbo.com, has a section, The Look, with a slide show for each character's outfits from each season and lists designers for dresses, shoes, bags and accessories.
Carrie the sex columnist simply has to show up in an impractically priced pair of Manolo Blahnik stilettos with her capri pants, and mimics wobble out of shoe stores.
Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, wears cargo pants topped by diaphanous dresses and cardigans buttoned tightly over long peasant blouses, carries impossibly big bags with impossibly tiny skirts, and mixes patterns to the point of distraction. It's high-fashion paired with vintage, all put together with a touch of confusion. One often wonders if the light's on in her closet, so to speak.
When she entered a Season Two scene with a nameplate necklace at her throat spelling out C-A-R-R-I-E, viewers did the same (hopefully with their own names). Ditto on the big blooms she pinned to her hair, hats and blouses, as well as the Fendi and Timmy Woods handbags at her elbow ... price be damned.
Other clothing and accessory trends the show spawned:
Jimmy Choo shoes
Hats of all kinds
Pucci sportswear
Horseshoe necklaces
Circle skirts
Shearling boots
Rolled-up jeans
Boy-cut underwear
Dooney & Bourke handbags
Apple laptops
Cargo pants
Decorative cell phones.
