CAMDEN - Nineteen-year-old Chris Brock had moved into the next phase of his life.
In fall 2003, the Preble Shawnee High School graduate enrolled with an academic scholarship at Miami University as a history major.
But while deer hunting in November, Brock fell from a tree stand, landing headfirst. The fall paralyzed him from the waist down.
Friends, family and volunteers are holding a benefit concert for Brock at 6 p.m. Saturday at Preble Shawnee High School to help with medical expenses.
Benefit organizer Anita Sackenheim hopes the event will not only raise money, but encourage Brock.
Featured musicians will be the bluegrass band Newfound Road and the Beacon Quartet. Talawanda and Preble Shawnee high schools choirs will also perform.
Brock had helped coach the football team last summer at Preble Shawnee High School.
"Last summer, Head Coach Mike Campbell asked (Chris) to come out, and he helped with weight training and conditioning, stats and the offensive line," said Paul Correll, assistant football coach at Preble Shawnee High School.
Correll's relationship with Chris began a couple years ago as offensive line coach.
"The coaches thought so highly of him, we asked him to come out on a volunteer basis to help coach," Correll said.
Chris returned to his home in Camden on Jan. 14 from the Drake Center for rehabilitation in Cincinnati.
"He's really excited about college, ready for the challenge. It's just the type of kid he is," Correll said.
