Buckeyes battle back vs. Gophers

The Cincinnati Enquirer

MINNEAPOLIS - Tony Stockman had 21 points and four steals to lead Ohio State past Minnesota 70-59 Wednesday.

J.J. Sullinger added 15 points and Brandon Fuss-Cheatham scored 12 for the Buckeyes (13-13, 5-8 Big Ten), who fell behind early before bouncing back against the cold-shooting Gophers (2-12, 10-16).

Minnesota led by as many as 12 points midway through the first half, but the Buckeyes came back to cut the lead to 30-29 at the break on Stockman's steal and basket in the final 10 seconds.

Ohio State took its first lead on its first possession of the second half when Fuss-Cheatham converted on a driving layup, and the Buckeyes cruised from there.

Minnesota connected on just 29.2 percent of its shots in the second half and finished at 35.7 percent for the game. The Gophers went 3-for-25 from 3-point range.

Minnesota freshman Kris Humphries, the Big Ten's leading scorer and rebounder, was just 1-for-10 from the field in the first half. He finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Gophers.

Transylvania 76, Thomas More 70

The Saints' only lead came in the game's first two minutes, and they suffered their third consecutive loss. R.K. Thurman led all scorers with 22 points and also had nine rebounds for the Thomas More (11-13).

Matt Finke had 21 points for the Pioneers (16-8).

Women: Miami 76, Ball State 65

Cindi Merrill scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second half, when the RedHawks (19-6, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) pulled away after leading by just two points at the break.

Amanda Jackson added 17 points and Colleen Day scored 12 point and grabbed 10 rebounds for Miami.

The RedHawks outscored the Cardinals 46-28 in the paint and forced 28 Ball State turnovers, which they converted to 27 points.

Kelsey Corbin led Ball State (12-13, 7-7) with 21 points.
