Sports notes
Replay approved for Big Ten games
The NCAA has given the Big Ten clearance to experiment with instant replay next season. The league will use replay in all 44 conference games and, potentially, 22 nonconference games played in Big Ten stadiums. The system, if successful, eventually could be adopted nationally. The Big Ten operated a pilot program last year, not stopping games but reviewing potentially disputed calls on Mondays. Of nearly 11,000 plays in 68 games, the league found about 50 would have been subject to review. Of those, Dave Parry, the league's supervisor of football officials, estimates 25 to 30 would have been changed.
Minor league team tryout
The Central Ohio Lions, the 2003 Minor League Football News National Champions, will hold an open tryout for all positions March 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Gateway Sports Park, 1103 Gateway Drive, Dayton, Ohio. No pads are needed, but players should wear workout attire and bring necessary equipment. Call Brent Lewis at (937) 241-7710 for more information.
Ad creates new crossover athletes
Andre Agassi on the baseball mound? Marion Jones as a gymnast? It all makes perfect sense in Nike's new ad campaign, "What if?" The ads, which will air until April, feature star athletes playing sports outside their specialties.
