Anonymous painter working in Rome
Oil on canvas
This is a scene out of Matthew that is a parable on faith. Jesus is walking on the water of a lake. Peter recognizes him and tells Christ to ask him to come to him. Peter begins to walk on the water but when he feels the wind, he doubts and begins to sink. Jesus saves him and says: "You have so little faith."
The scene in the foreground is tranquil with an elongated Jesus and a crude-featured Peter shown without his keys. Behind the two are the apostles who appear to be painted in a folkloric style.
