'Minister,' Bejarano victorious in Battaglia

The Enquirer and wire reports

Silver Minister turned his home-field advantage into a 23/4-length win Saturday in the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park. The 1 1/16-mile Battaglia is the final local prep for the Grade II $500,000 Lane's End Stakes on March 20.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano's win in the Battaglia was one of six on the 12-race card, the second time he has won six on a card during the winter-spring meeting.

Whirlaway Stakes winner Little Matth Man and previously unbeaten Maryland-bred White Mountain Boy were second and third.

Favorite Silver Minister, owned by Lloyd Madison Farms IV and trained by Greg Foley, paid $6.40.

Silver Minister, a Triple Crown nominee, has won four straight at Turfway after finishing second in his first two career races at Churchill Downs. He added the Battaglia to victories in the Turfway Prevue and WEBN Stakes, winning the three by a combined 13 lengths.
